What is Athletics?

Athletics covers multiple events involving running, jumping, throwing or walking. Often referred to as track & field, the sport includes single events (100m, 10,000m, long jump), combined events (decathlon, heptathlon), and team events (4x100m relays). Athletics traces its roots back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece, beginning as contests of speed, strength, and endurance. Over the centuries, disciplines such as running, jumping, and throwing evolved into a structured sport with standardized rules and global competitions. Modern athletics emerged in the 19th century with the establishment of unified regulations and world championships. Today, athletics remains one of the core pillars of the Olympic Games, showcasing the peak of human physical capability.
