What is Fencing?
Fencing originated as military training in ancient civilizations and evolved into a refined European sport during the Renaissance. By the 18th century, protective gear and standardized rules had transformed it into a competitive discipline. Fencing has appeared in two previous editions and returns in Riyadh 2025, featuring 160 athletes (80 men / 80 women) competing for 12 gold medals from 17 to 20 November 2025 at Boulevard Arena 01C.Allocation & Eligibility
NOCs may enter one team per team event, consisting of a maximum of three athletes officially entered within their quota of 9 male and 9 female athletes.
NOCs participating in team competitions may register two fencers in the individual events. NOCs not entered in team competitions will have their athletes selected based on the FIE ranking, subject to the overall quota of 80 men and 80 women.
Athletes must meet the minimum age requirements set by the FIE and are required to hold a valid international FIE licence.
