What is Volleyball?
Invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan in the United States, volleyball was designed as a less intense alternative to basketball, combining elements of tennis and handball. It quickly gained global popularity and became an Olympic sport in 1964, with both indoor and beach variations. It is played by two teams of six and sees players hit a ball back and forth over a high net with their hands, trying to make the ball touch the court within the opponent’s playing area without it being returned. A match is won when a team reaches 25 points with a two-point margin. Effective teamwork and communication are crucial, with serving, passing, setting, blocking and spiking all also essential skills that must be employed strategically.Table Tennis and the ISSA
Volleyball has featured in all previous editions and will continue in Riyadh 2025, featuring 8 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams competing from 4 to 13 November 2025 at Boulevard Arena 01C.Allocation & Eligibility
The top seven NOCs on the FIVB World Ranking list receive team slots. If any invited NOC is unable to participate, the slot will be passed to the next-best ranked.
If teams don’t have FIVB world ranking, selection will be based on participation at Konya 2021 and in FIVB zonal events.
NOCs may enter a maximum of one team per gender, with the host nation directly allocated one men’s/women’s team slot. All athletes must adhere to FIVB eligibility regulations.
