What is Wushu

Wushu is a combination of performance elements and martial arts, focusing on striking, grappling, kicking and throwing. Originating in ancient China, the Sanda discipline featuring at Riyadh 2025 is a contemporary style similar to Muay Thai. To win a bout, athletes must score more points than the opponent by landing punches and kicks, performing takedowns and forcing them into a count or off the platform.

Wushu and the ISSA

Wushu returns for Riyadh 2025 after featuring in two previous editions, with 76 athletes (38 men / 38 women) competing for 6 gold medals on 15–16 November 2025 at Boulevard Arena 01A.

Allocation & Eligibility

IWUF will allocate 38 male and 38 female athlete slots based on NSF participation in IWUF World Championships, taking activity level, performance and standings into account. NOCs may enter a maximum of one athlete per weight category and three athletes per gender in total. One slot per event is reserved for the host nation. Eligible athletes must adhere to IWUF Wushu Sanda Competition Rules and Judging Methods and be born between 1 January 1985 and 31 December 2007.
